What is a P-trap?
A P-trap is the U-shaped or S-shaped bend of pipe located below a sink, bathtub, or drain that holds a small amount of water to form a seal preventing sewer gases from entering the home.
The P-trap is the curved section of drainpipe directly under your sink or fixture. Its name comes from the shape it makes when viewed from the side, and it sits between the drain opening and the main waste line that runs to the sewer or septic system.
Water naturally pools in the lowest part of this bend, creating a seal that stops sewer gases, odors, and pests from traveling back up through your pipes and into your home. This water barrier is essential to indoor air quality and safety. Without it, drain fumes would regularly enter living spaces.
P-traps can fail in two common ways. They dry out when a drain sits unused for months, because the standing water evaporates. Once the seal breaks, gas can escape. They also clog when hair, grease, food debris, or mineral buildup accumulates in the curve, restricting water flow and backing up drains. Hard water and soap residue are especially prone to building up in the trap's narrowest point.
Many homeowners notice slow drains or bad smells coming from under the sink, both signs the P-trap needs attention. If you suspect a failed trap or persistent clog, a local plumber can inspect it, clear blockages, or replace the assembly if it is corroded or damaged beyond cleaning.
